How this is calculated
The US percentile is built from U.S. Census Bureau household income data (the Current Population Survey's Annual Social and Economic Supplement) and Census-derived percentile estimates for the tails of the distribution. The world percentile uses the World Inequality Lab's global income framework — the same research used in the World Household Income chart — measured in purchasing-power-parity dollars per adult, so a given income means roughly the same thing whether it was earned in a high- or low-cost country.
Between published data points, the calculator interpolates on a logarithmic scale, which is the standard approach for income and wealth data: incomes are heavily skewed, so a straight linear guess between two known points would badly overstate percentiles in the middle of the range. Values far outside our data — extremely low or extremely high incomes — are reported as "below" or "above" our data range rather than as a fabricated precise decimal.
Why the two numbers are so different
A household income that lands solidly in the US middle class routinely lands in the top 10–20% globally. That's not a coincidence — average incomes in high-income countries are several times the world average, and purchasing-power comparisons only partly close that gap. It's a useful reframe: income anxiety is almost always relative to a local peer group, not a reflection of where that income actually sits on a global scale.
Percentile isn't the same as your RatRace Score
Where your income ranks doesn't tell you how close you are to financial independence — a top-1% earner with a lifestyle to match can be further from freedom than a median earner who directs a third of their income into passive-income-producing assets. Percentile is about your income alone; the RatRace Score measures your passive income against your expenses, which is the number that actually predicts your freedom date.
