How Long Will It Take You to Reach Financial Independence? A Simple Formula

Ignore income for a moment. If you know one number — the share of your take-home pay you actually save — you can get a surprisingly good estimate of how many years stand between you and financial independence. Here's the formula, why it works, and the one variable most people overlook when they apply it.


The insight: only the savings rate matters

A household earning $50,000 a year and saving half of it reaches FI on the same timeline as a household earning $500,000 a year saving half of it. That feels counterintuitive until you notice why: your FI target is built from your expenses (roughly 25× annual spending, per the 4% rule), and your funding speed is built from your savings. Both scale directly with income, so income itself cancels out of the equation — only the ratio between spending and saving is left.

The formula

Assume you invest your savings at a steady real (inflation-adjusted) rate of return r, and your FI target is 25× your annual expenses. If your savings rate is s (the share of take-home pay you save; you spend the remaining 1 − s), the number of years n to reach FI from zero savings works out to:

n = ln( 1 + r × 25 × (1 − s) ⁄ s ) ⁄ ln(1 + r)

It looks dense, but it's just compound interest solved backward: how many years of investing a fixed fraction of income does it take for the growing pile to hit 25 times what you're spending. You don't need to run the formula by hand — the table below solves it for a range of savings rates at a 5% real return, which is a common planning assumption for a diversified portfolio after inflation.

Savings rate → rough years to FI

Notice the curve isn't a straight line — each additional 10 points of savings rate buys you more years back than the last one did. That's the double effect of a higher savings rate: it grows your invested pool faster, and it simultaneously shrinks the expense total your 25x target is built from, so the same extra dollar saved is doing two jobs at once.

Why a table beats a single guess, and a live ratio beats the table

The table is useful precisely because it removes income from the conversation and puts the focus on the one variable you actually control day to day. But it still assumes your savings rate is constant and your starting point is zero — two things that are rarely true for very long. The more direct measurement is your actual current ratio:
